Would you believe me if I told you that you could lose weight by eating more often? That’s the power of portion control, a simple technique that I strongly believe can help you reach your weight loss goals and maintain a healthy weight.
Smaller, More Frequent Meals Can Help You Look & Feel Better
By eating smaller meals multiple times throughout the day, you can take the burden off of your digestive system and keep your blood sugar levels stable. Smaller, more frequent meals also helps to boost your metabolism whereas consuming large, less frequent meals can slow your metabolism and lead to weight gain, not to mention leave you feeling sluggish and tired.
If you make smaller portions a habit, you can quickly teach your body to be satisfied on less every time you eat! And the fewer calories consumed, the fewer calories you need to burn, and we all know that means less time at the gym.
As for what should be making up those smaller portions on your plate: vegetables, a little bit of whole grains and lean protein. Try to learn about the recommended portion sizes of various foods and follow the guidelines as much as possible. A good rule of thumb is to keep veggie portions 1/2 up or 1 cup portions of each vegetable on your plate. For protein, you can keep it around the size of a deck of cards.
In addition to keeping portion sizes small, you’ll want to remember to chew your food slowly which boosts your saliva levels and aids in digestion. It takes about 15 minutes for your brain to finally get the signal that your body is getting full, so make sure to eat slowly and avoid overeating and consuming more than your body needs.
Portion control is pretty painless and simple to follow. Once you get the hang of it, it will become second nature and you’ll see the extra pounds disappear!
