Is Vegetable Oil Healthy?

Miranda Says NO – and So Does Science

When we are in our small town grocery store, our food choices are so limited. We can buy vegetables, but when it comes to grab-and-go snacks, our pantry better be stocked if we aren’t headed to town soon. When we head down the chip aisle and grab our favorite gluten free go-to snack, tortilla chips, we are welcomed by an abundant array of choices. Then comes our daughter, Miranda. “Did you look at the label?” she asks. “Not yet.” I reply. I know the ingredient to which she is referring: vegetable oil. She is such a stickler for that ingredient! My craving for chips and her persistence clashed for the last time — I need to know for sure: Is vegetable oil health or not?!

So many “healthy” foods have this sneaky ingredient:

  • Peanut Butter
  • Tortilla Chips
  • Vegetable Fries
  • Gluten Free Cookies

There are varying degrees of vegetable oil quality — and ingredients. Unfortunately, when looking at nutrition labels, they just say, “vegetable oil.” Since most seem to pose health risks, and healthy oils are so delicious, easy to use, and widely available, it only makes sense to stick to the good oils like olive, coconut, avocado, grape seed and other nutritious oils.

Kris Gunnars at Authority Nutrition wrote an article called, “6 Reasons Why Vegetable Oils are Toxic.” I am a huge proponent of being VERY careful where you get your advice. Do not take information at face value — make sure there are sources referenced! Gunnars’ article is well cited, and very informative. He lists the health risks and even shows a video of how vegetable oil is made.

We prefer the healthier oils, and as inconvenient as it may be, it is a good idea to steer clear of vegetable oil. Thanks, Miranda, for caring. Sorry everyone else — you want to feel good, right? Well, stick with it! It is way easier than you’re making it. Here are some tips:

1. Stock up on healthy chips and snacks.

2. Pace yourself with the snacks you have.

3. Cook with olive oil and coconut oil.

Keep pressing forward – I promise you will LOVE eating better food. Tell us how we can help!
